Background for the International Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Ranking
For the past 10 years, UI GreenMetric has become one of the flagship programs of Universitas Indonesia that ranks universities around the world according to appointed indicators of campus environmental sustainability issues, such as setting and infrastructure, energy, waste management, water, transportation, and education. This ranking is one of the university’s efforts in promoting sustainability in campuses and also in involving stakeholders in any kind of effort to create a sustainable environment.
UI GreenMetric has a strong commitment to become a global platform for university students in the world to become active players in addressing the environmental challenges facing the world today. With the principle of mutual cooperation and sharing experiences, UI GreenMetric aims to raise awareness of universities as agents of change for a better world. The ranking is conducted through an online questionnaire system in which each university provided data about sustainability indicators. The data then automatically processed into a ranking.
This program has been conducted since 2010, the participation of universities around the world continue to increase. In 2010, approximately nearly 100 universities from 35 countries participated in the UI GreenMetric. In 2019, there are 780 Universities from 83 countries. The increasing number shows that this program can grab the attention of many universities throughout the world.
During the ranking process, many universities performance in UI GreenMetric have been improved. In order to increase the performance of each university in UI GreenMetric, universities need to share their sustainability’s achievement and current condition in a forum. 780 universities in UI GreenMetric Network are good examples of how sustainability policies can be implemented in universities in some respects such as setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste and water management, transportation and also education. These universities can share information about the implementation of sustainability policies in each university. In 2016, the 6th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Ranking was planned by the Steering Committee of the International UI GreenMetric World University Ranking Network to be held in the University of Zanjan, Zanjan, Iran in 2020.
